Has Call of Duty had its day? Skyrim sees it off over Christmas and now FIFA 12 retakes UK number 1

Everyone expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to take the UK Christmas number one – but it didn’t. In fact, it didn’t really ‘win’ Christmas at all, except perhaps for beating down cheeky upstart Battlefield 3 in convincing fashion in its own personal battle. Instead, thanks to some impressive price undercutting, it was Skyrim that took the honours, securing a two-week stay at the top of the sales mountain like one of its trademark dragons.

But even now as we see the first post-Christmas sales (where all that lovely Christmas money goes on what the public really wanted for Christmas), it’s FIFA 12 that brings down Skyrim with a ‘Fuβ’ Ro Dah (well done, those who got that) to claim top spot in the all-formats chart. Observe:

 FIFA 12
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
 Just Dance 3
 Battlefield 3
 Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
 Saints Row The Third
 Need For Speed: The Run
 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Mario %26 Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games
 Star Wars: The Old Republic
 Forza Motorsport 4
 Mario Kart 7
Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call
 Zumba Fitness
 Sonic Generations
 Super Mario 3D Land
 Batman: Arkham City
 Zumba Fitness 2
 Rayman Origins
 Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Is Call of Duty starting to lose its stranglehold on the gaming public? Or did everyone who wanted to buy Modern Warfare 3 do so the day it came out? Either way, it’s refreshing to see a chart with only three fitness games in it and the rest taken up by ‘real’ videogames. Long may this trend continue.
