Most horror games pit players against terrifying but dim-witted foes. Is anybody really scared of mindless zombies and demons any more? Independent developer Red Barrels is looking to shake up the genre with its first-person horror game Outlast, and it has an in-engine trailer ready to share.
The REC/Quarantine-style footage gives a creepy introduction to the plight of Miles Upshur, an investigative reporter checking out a supposedly abandoned lunatic asylum owned by a shady corporation. While that trailer was fully scripted, the game already has a playable tech demo made to secure a grant from the Canadian government.
Red Barrels was founded by three ex-Ubisoft and Naughty Dog developers, whose credits include the Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Uncharted franchises. Outlast is their first project as a studio, and it’s currently slated for release on Steam in summer 2013.
