Scalebounds changed since it was a Wii game in 2006 – fewer dinosaurs, for example

Xbox One-exclusive Scalebound (opens in new tab) is one of our most-anticipated games of 2016 (opens in new tab). It’s directed by Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya and developed by Bayonetta (opens in new tab) studio Platinum Games. It stars a capable young swordsman hero and there’s a giant freaking dragon in it. But Scalebound looked quite a bit different in 2006, when it was being drafted as a Wii game starring a young girl who commanded dinosaurs.

“When we first started, the idea was for a Wii game, and we wanted to use a Wii Remote to do the orders for the dinosaurs,” Kamiya recently told (opens in new tab) GameSpot. “You were in control of the dinosaurs, you were ordering the dinosaurs around, and they’d do cool things. Then after we made Bayonetta, we started the prototype. The first thing that I made a change to was making it a dragon game.”

Kamiya noted that by changing the dinosaurs to something even more powerful, the little girl felt more passive by comparison. The new hero, Drew, was designed to be a more proactive part of battles. That little girl may not be gone completely, however; when a fan asked on Twitter if players would see her as an extra or easter egg, Kamiya tweeted (opens in new tab) back a smiley face and linked (opens in new tab) to an old tweet that reads: “Thanx all, but if I keep talking, Microsoft will make me jump off the Space Needle, so forgive me until there is new, official info.”

Until next time, then!
