James Wan says hes bringing a “horror element” to the Aquaman movie

Aquaman movie director James Wan isn’t just known as one of the many filmmakers soon to help bring Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe to life. He’s also big in the horror movie world having directed Saw, Dead Silence, The Conjuring (and The Conjuring 2 (opens in new tab)), Insidious (and Insidious: Chapter 2).

If you thought making an Aquaman movie was a completing different project for him, you might be surprised. James Wan made an appearance in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con (opens in new tab) (along with all the rest of Warner Bros’ directors) and he revealed that he’s hoping to bring an element of horror to the superhero film.

“Fucking Aquaman! What can I say?” He started. “Aquaman’s such an amazing character. I love the fact that he’s never really been portrayed in the feature movie world before… and the opportunity to explore this universe, you know, bring a bit of my horror element into this. The deep sea is a scary world. And then also explore the wondrous world of atlantis. That’s all I have to say.”

I’m pleased to hear that the director will be drawing on his strengths when it comes to making Aquaman, but is a ‘horror element’ going to sit well with die hard fans? The drastic costume change has already caused a few grumbles and if the story of the aquatic hero moves any further from the original source material, James might find himself at the wrong end of a riot.

Directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, Aquaman is scheduled for release in the US on July 27, 2018, with a UK release date yet to be confirmed.
