Having become one of the most profitable films of 2011, it should come as no surprise that studio bosses have order a sequel to horror flick Insidious . What is surprising, however, is how many of the original team will be returning for round two.
Made for just $1.5m , Insidious raked in a staggering $97m at the box office, cementing James Wan’s reputation as a director capable of working miracles with a modest budget.
Recently placed in charge of the forthcoming MacGyver adaptation, Wan will return to the director’s chair for Insidious 2 , with writing duties resumed by original screenwriter Leigh Whannell.
“Both of us feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created,” said Whannell, “and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film.”
With that in mind, both Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne will reprise their roles in front of the camera, as will supporting players Lin Shaye and Ty Simpkins. And we can only assume that red-faced fellow will be making an appearance also…
While it might have been easy to dismiss this one as a cynical cash-in on the success of the original, the presence of the original stars, writer and director suggests this might be more than your average tired sequel. We’ll find out for sure when the film arrives in 2013.
