The Diablo series is as well-known for its levity as any gory, demon-filled dungeon-crawler can reasonably be expected to be. Things the games have treated with a bleakly mordant sort of light-heartedness include death, dismemberment, demonic possession and the physical incarnation of ultimate evil. But is there anything Blizzard is on record as taking seriously within the context of the upcoming Diablo III? As a matter of fact, there certainly is: the possibility of porting the game to consoles.
Speaking in a Gamescom press conference, Josh Mosqueira – Blizzard’s lead designer on Diablo III – wouldn’t come right out and confirm that a console version of the game is definitely a thing that will happen in our universe (the company still being on the hook forpromises it made (opens in new tab)almost ten damn years ago, after all). However, he did confirm that Blizzard is “very, very serious about bringing the Diablo III experience to the console,” and is currently “looking for programmers, designers, artists who think their dream job would be to bringDiablo to the console.”
The original made the crossover competently enough – we included it onour list of PS1 titles we’d love to replay on PSN (opens in new tab)– while the much-loved sequel has long been one of the mouse-and-keyboard set’s favorite things to lord over console owners, who never got a version. From what you’ve seen of Diablo III, how do you think it’d fare?
