Naughty Dog may not have been noticed by most gamers until 1996’s Crash Bandicoot, but the upstart-developer-turned-industry-powerhouse has been around in one form or another since 1984. The studio turns 30 this year, and to celebrate, the team got together with comic book publisher Dark Horse to make an special Art of Naughty Dog (opens in new tab) book to celebrate the anniversary. And if you’ve sampled some of the gorgeous production art made for Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us, that’s enough of a treat. But there’s a bit more to it than that.
The book takes you through the company’s awkward early years (what ’90s youth wasn’t awkward?), up to its 3D trendsetter Crash Bandicoot, and onwards to Naughty Dog’s present as one of the premiere creators in gaming. The book, out mid-October, is a great way to look back on Naughty Dog’s history, as is the accompanying video special that’s premiering alongside it that month.
