Jena Malones mystery character is cut from Batman v Superman

The mystery surrounding Jena Malone’s secretive role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (opens in new tab) won’t be uncovered anytime soon, because the actress’ performance has been cut entirely from the theatrical version of the movie. It’s a bit of a shame, considering the flurry of speculation about who she might be playing. Early rumors pegged her as Batman’s sidekick Robin and more recently (opens in new tab) she’s been linked to the role of Barbara Gordon.

Malone’s deleted role is just one casualty of the movie’s final edit, which is understandable, as the theatrical cut (opens in new tab) clocks in at 2 hours and 31 minutes. Luckily, we’ll still get to see her scenes on home video. Apparently, her role is vital to the expansion of the DC Cinematic Universe – but not vital to the Batman V Superman plot – so she’ll turn up in the R-rated Ultimate Edition (opens in new tab) that’s due out on Blu-ray.

Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab) dropped the scoop in its ongoing coverage of the movie, that’s said to continue with further details of the Ultimate Edition. That version of the movie plans to up the violence past the confines of the PG-13 rating with “brutal fight scenes.” Oh, and it’s said to include “additional hints at future films” and even more new characters in addition to Malone.

Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Diane Lane, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Laurence Fishburne, Amy Adams but not Jena Malone, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will arrive in UK and US cinemas on March 25, 2016.
