Nintendo’s current home console hasn’t exactly sparkled like its predecessor did, but it’s had a good handful of greats like Mario Kart 8 and Bayonetta 2. The Nintendo NX (opens in new tab) is till a way off (we don’t even know if that’s its real name!), and there are only a few gems to come to the Wii U before it steps aside. In fact, the Wii U seems to be on its last legs, saving what looks to be one of the best games to land on the console (a brand new Zelda game) for last. Here are the most significant titles remaining in the upcoming Wii U games lineup.
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Release date: Oct. 7, 2016
We haven’t seen much from the newest Paper Mario game, but that papercraft world already looks gorgeous on Wii U. This time it’s all about paint rather than stickers and it’s up to you to return colour to Prism Island as some nefarious force is trying to drain it away, leaving everything flat and lifeless. Your weapon of choice is a paint hammer that lets you imbue vibrant hues to various objects and even revives any colourless paper Toads. It doesn’t look like it has quite the same RPG focus as the original Thousand-Year Door, but expect plenty of humour and folding yourself to get past various obstacles.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the title of the next Zelda game we’ve been longing to hear about, and it seems that Nintendo is changing the 3D Zelda game formula a bit. Breath of the Wild is going back to the basics, giving players a completely open world to explore (so open that you can theoretically go straight to the last boss). Series staples like Lin’s green tunic and small arsenal of weapons have been replaced with collectible armor pieces, harsh weather-resistant clothing, and breakable weapons. Cooking and crafting is a major focus and required for Link’s survival and there are plenty of new ways the new hero can interact with the environment. There are still plenty of mysteries to uncover around Breath of the Wild, like how it will function on the NX, but we can’t say we aren’t incredibly excited to learn more.
