Star Wars 8 is – surprise surprise – getting a score from John Williams in a few weeks

While we kind of knew that he’d be back, John Williams has officially confirmed that he’s going to score Star Wars 8 (opens in new tab). Because… of course he is. The legendary composer made the announcement during a recent concert in Boston (via MassLive (opens in new tab)), where he told the crowds that he’s seen an early cut of the movie and plans to start work on the project “in a few weeks.” Hooray!

Fans of the franchise will be pleased to hear that Williams is penning the score for his eighth Star Wars movie. His Oscar-nominated work on The Force Awakens, and in particular his character-specific compositions for Rey, is what led to him accepting the gig from Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy. Williams was so “enchanted” by Daisy Ridley’s performance as the loveable scavenger that he couldn’t stand the thought of another composer writing music for her scenes.

It’s definitely hard to imagine anyone else matching Williams’ contribution to the Star Wars saga, but we’ll experience that when Rogue One hits theaters in December. The Gareth Edwards-directed spin-off has Alexandre Desplat on scoring duties. It’ll be interesting to hear how he makes his mark on the Star Wars franchise, especially with Williams still very much a part of the saga.

Directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, and Benicio del Toro, Star Wars: Episode 8 opens in cinemas on December 15, 2017.
