Fifteen years after M Night Shyamalan made the gritty, comic-book-inspired Unbreakable, the director has revealed that he’s still interested in making a sequel.
While talking to Collider (opens in new tab), Shyamalan was asked if he ever thinks about continuing the adventures of David Dunn (Bruce Willis), who becomes an unlikely superhero when he discovers he’s indestructable.
“Yeah, I do sometimes,” the director revealed. “I love those characters and I love that world. Of course, the whole world makes comic book movies now. At the time, it was completely novel.”
He went on to add: “The beauty of the world of Unbreakable is that you’re playing it for reality. It should never feel like a comic-book movie. It feels like a straight-up drama. It’s real.
“You’re confronting the possibility that comic-book characters were based on people that were real. That’s the premise, so the tone has to be super grounded. It would be cool.”
Previously, Willis revealed that a trilogy treatment for Unbreakable was already written, and the sequels would see David going up against the evil Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) in an epic fight.
“What [Shyamalan] wanted to do at the time was shoot the second part where the two superheroes fight and we didn’t do that,” Willis said in 2008. “We started a different way, but he’s still talking about shooting that film.”
Whether Shyamalan and Willis will ever reunite for the sequel remains to be seen, but with comic-book movies booming, there could definitely be an audience for another gritty, real-life take on superheroes.
