Even if you’ve never picked up a Harry Potter book, you could probably name Hogwarts’ four houses (there’s the Birdlions, the Snakers, the Badgerfolx, and the Crowsfeet). Thanks to some source code discovered on Pottermore (opens in new tab) by Reddit (opens in new tab) user TigerC10, we may already know the official house names of Ilvermorny – the U.S. equivalent of Hogwarts – as they will appear in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (opens in new tab).
The four houses are all named after mythological creatures that stem from American Indian folklore (which is sensible, since in author JK Rowling’s world the Indians were doing magic on the continent long before all the European muggles showed up): the Wampus, the Thunderbird, the Pukwudgie, and the Horned Serpent.
Here’s a quick cheat sheet if you’re not up on your North American mythology: the Wampus is a fearsome half-woman, half-cat; the Thunderbird is a massive, powerful eagle-type-thing that can generate storms with a flap of its wings; the Pukwudgie are sort of like hobbits crossed with grey aliens that can do mischievous and deadly magic; and the Horned Serpent has all sorts of depictions, but it generally controls water and/or storms.
The source code was pulled from what appears to be another Pottermore personality quiz, so you may not need to wait long to determine which Ilvermorny house you would belong to.
Directed by David Yates and starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Gemma Chan, Ron Perlman, and Ezra Miller, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is scheduled to hit UK and US cinemas on November 18, 2016.
